Education Seminar: Maritime Law

Overview

This joint program was developed in collaboration with the Maritime Law Association of Canada. This program brought together experienced judges in the specialized area of maritime law to discuss issues of common interest.

Objectives

The objectives of this seminar were to provide participants with an awareness of key jurisprudential developments, to develop a better understanding of issues concerning Aboriginal title in maritime law, and to enhance participants’ skills in this specialized area of jurisdiction for the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal.

Summary

With senior judges and practitioners as members of faculty, sessions focused on the origins and development of admiralty action in rem, Aboriginal title post-Tsilhqot’in Nation and maritime claims, federal paramountcy and “co-operation” issues, maritime personal injury and passenger liability, special contracts of carriage of goods by water, and fisheries law.
